Monastery of Saint Savvas

Just above the port of Pothia, at the top of the hill lies the monastery of Saint Savvas. Saint Savvas of Kalymnos, is one of the newest contemporary saints of Christian Orthodox church and patron saint of the island. He lived here during the last twenty years of his life and has been a confessor, ascetic, icon painter and miracle-worker. Many smelled a heavenly fragrance in his presence and some even saw him rising above the ground as he stood at prayer.

The temple is decorated with paintings of great artistic value and quality, being so beautiful and moving that perfectly reflect the holiness of the place.

From the courtyard of the temple, there is a clear view of the valley of Pothia and of the sea on the east. This is a unique place of beauty and tranquility.
