Castle of Antimachia
The Castle of Antimachia in Kos was built by the Knights of St. John to strengthen the defense in the interior of the island, as it was unassailable from the sea. The castle completes the network of the fortifications of Kos in the 14th century that included the castle of Nerantzia at the port of Kos, the castle at Pyli and the castle at Kefalos. It is remarkable that there are no towers in the castle.
The most important historical moment for the Castle of Antimachia was the siege in June 1457 by the Ottomans. 15 Knights and 200 natives effectively resisted for 23 days and forced a Turkish army of 16,000 to end the siege and leave the island.
