Castle of Astypalaia

The most important attraction and archaeological site is the Venetian Castle located on the top of the hill of Chora. Its presence dominates the space during the summer nights as it illuminates and gives the visitor a fairytale feeling of another era.

Following the narrow alleys and steps, the visitor reaches the castle from which the view is immersive. It was built by the Quirini family in the 13th century in order to protect the inhabitants from the raids of the pirates.

Traditional local dark stone has been used for its construction, and it is surrounded by white Cycladic houses, the outer walls of which create a real wall, with small windows for embrasures.
